Sony hopes PS3 to break even before March '08

You’d think a company with decades of experience and many other successful products would base a marketing strategy on things other than hope. Unfortunately that is not the case for Sony, so it seems, as nothing else has gone right with the PS3. However, their hopes certainly are high, claiming that this fiscal year might see a huge turnaround for the PS3, in terms of cost.

The hope is that lowered manufacturing costs will bring the PS3 closer to a break-even point, to where they will no longer lose money with each console sold. That change, they say, could be less than a year away:

Sony executive VP Nobuyuki Oneda said during an investor conference call that the company may be able to break even on PlayStation 3 production costs sometime this fiscal year, which ends March 2008.

That would be a very good sign for them, though Microsoft has shown that a console doesn’t have to be profitable to be successful. Given the oodles of money Sony has poured out to other venues, though, they want this, as do their investors.

Now they just have to convince people to start buying the console.

Target stores to stock only Blu-ray DVD players

The next-gen HD format war heated up today after Target, the second largest retailer in the US, announced that it would begin to sell standalone Blu-ray players exclusively in its retail stores starting late this fall and into the holiday season.

Target will begin carrying Sony’s least expensive BDP-S300 Blu-ray player sometime in October for $499 alongside Blu-ray DVDs from several studios. Although this is the first standalone HD player sold at Target retail stores, the company does sell a Toshiba HD DVD player through its web site and carries both HD DVD and Blu-ray titles in its stores.

Still, the move by Target further boosts the Sony-backed technology and may deal another blow to rival HD-DVD. Just this June, Blockbuster turned its back to the HD DVD camp by announcing plans to line its shelves with Blu-ray DVDs only, saying that Blu-ray rentals are “significantly outpacing HD DVD rentals.”

However, with the PlayStation 3 console and LG’s new multi-format players now selling for $499 or less, I don’t see why anyone would bother buying the Sony BDP-S300. Perhaps bringing the price down a little more could jump start sales of Sony’s standalone player.
