La placa de Nazca, que es de menor tamaño, se mueve hacia el este, aprox. 4cm al año. Nazca, se introduce por debajo de la Placa Sudamericana (se le llama subducción, que por procesos posteriores, levanta la cordillera de los Andes), y se genera acumulación de energía por el movimiento.
